The Confirmation program is taught by the Rabbi and Cantor and it is for students in the tenth grade. The curriculum focuses on the Jewish response to real life situations. Our students are bombarded by TV and other media images of violence, misogyny, drug abuse, promiscuity, cynicism and hatred. Music videos, sitcoms and dramas, TV commercials, and Internet sites often are what shape their views of relationships, honesty, love and language. The images can be troubling and vulgar as well as humorous and entertaining. We will utilize different media to help our students clarify their values and behavioral choices through an interactive program called Taking the MTV (Media and Torah Values) Challenge. In addition to multi-media presentations and lively discussions, we will provide tools that enable our kids to learn to deconstruct media images and compare those messages with a Jewish alternative. Over 100 traditional texts will be studied as part of this innovative process. Finally, the year will include an evening student and parents program and the preparation of a beautiful and meaningful Confirmation Service during which they will lead us in worship, while expressing their Jewish identities and affirming their commitment to our community and their Jewish futures.
